Dr. Marie Paris Pishmish, a Turkish-Armenian astronomer who played an instrumental role in establishing the study of modern astronomy in Mexico, embodies a kind of woman who has been embraced wholeheartedly in her profession and regarded as a leader in her field by men and women alike. Despite the prevailing norms of her era, she succeeded in becoming a leading voice in the field of astronomy.

The election of Argentine cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis I took the world by surprise, charming Catholics and non-Catholics alike with his plain demeanor and unpretentious manner of relating to people, bringing simplicity to a Church with a 2,000-year history that is worth its weight in gold.

For Argentine-Armenians, his election is particularly significant, and has been moving. Many of them have seen him in person, and not a few have spoken with the spiritual leader of 1.2 billion Catholics all over the world. Monsignor Bergoglio, an easy man to approach who used public transportation in Buenos Aires at the time he was the city’s archbishop, was a close friend of the Armenian community and the Prelate of the Armenian Church in Argentina, Archbishop Kissag Mouradian.

Se cumplen ochenta años de la estremecedora novela épica Los cuarenta días de Musa Dagh. Su denuncia fue un rayo que partió conciencias dormidas y se convirtió en uno de los libros más frecuentados de la época. En medio de la ignorancia, la censura y ajenas urgencias, el planificado asesinato de todo un pueblo había quedado en el más oscuro rincón de las agendas. Con una prosa restallante, su autor describe las atrocidades cometidas por el decadente imperio otomano y cómo se construyó una resistencia que involucró las aldeas que rodean la montaña de Musa Dagh. Aislados, sin comida y sin recursos, un millar y medio de personas se negaron a dejarse arrollar. Es interesante el apoyo que durante esa tragedia les brindó el pastor alemán Lepsius, quien mantuvo un esclarecedor diálogo con Enver Pashá, comandante turco. Este jefe explicó sin cortapisas las razones (o sinrazones) de su gobierno para deportar y asesinar a "los piojos" de su país: el pueblo armenio. La lucha duró cuarenta días, hasta que acudió a rescatarlos una fracción de la armada francesa. El escalofriante y largo episodio pasó a transformarse en un símbolo de la tragedia que quedó inscripta para siempre en el corazón de los armenios.

Kerry Comes to Turkey With Rebuke of Its Leader Over Zionism Remark

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry chastised Turkey’s prime minister on Friday, March 1 for recently calling Zionism a “crime against humanity,” a comment that could frustrate Mr. Kerry’s desire to see an improvement in estranged Turkish-Israeli relations.
When Mr. Kerry set off on Sunday on a nine-nation trip, his plan was to use his visit in Turkey to consult on trade, the crisis in Syria and other Middle East issues.
But on Wednesday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a United Nations forum in Vienna that the international community should consider Islamophobia a crime against humanity “like Zionism or anti-Semitism or fascism.”
