Remembering Simon Simonian

Vahe H. Apelian

Simon Simonian was one of the towering intellects and literary figures of the Armenian Diaspora's post-Genocide century. He was an educator, publisher, editor, author, and an activist.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of his birth. Simonian was born on March 24, 1914 in Aintab. His Sassoun-born father's name was Ove (Օվէ). His mother's name was Menoush (Մենուշ). She hailed from Aintab. Sassoun was once an exclusively Armenian-inhabited highland while Aintab (now Gaziantep) had a large Armenian population. Simonian was their eldest child.

After Opening Way to Rebels, Turkey Is Paying Heavy Price

Ben Hubbard
Ceylan Yeginsu

HABUR BORDER GATE, Turkey — In normal times, hauling 50,000 pounds of frozen chicken into Iraq is a routine job for Turfan Aydin, a Turkish trucker who has been working the route for years. But the cross-border trade has suddenly all but halted, locked up by the insurgent offensive in Iraq and the kidnapping of 80 Turkish citizens.
Once this border was wide open, as Turkey allowed rebel groups of any stripe easy access to the battlefields in Syria in an effort to topple President Bashar al-Assad. But that created fertile ground in Syria for the development of the Sunni militant group that launched a blitzkrieg in Iraq this month, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The Armenian Identity in France in the Grip of Memorialization

Tigran Yegavian

Four generations have succeeded the first wave of refugee survivors of the Genocide who ended up settling along the Paris-Lyon-Marseille axis in the 1920s. Formerly at the forefront of political activism in the Diaspora, the Armenian structures of France are now plagued by a general sclerosis, whose effects became apparent in the mid-1990s.

Benjamin Whitaker, Author of the U.N. Genocide Report of 1985, Passes Away

Geoffrey Robertson

The former Labour MP for Hampstead, north London, Ben Whitaker, who has died aged 79, was the embodiment of the liberal values associated with the area. At the 1966 election he won the Hampstead seat, for 81 years a Tory fiefdom, from the reactionary former home secretary Henry Brooke, and championed the progressive social reforms of the Harold Wilson government, in which he held a number of posts. Subsequently, as a human rights lawyer long before this was a fashionable career, he made distinguished contributions to civil liberties in Britain, and especially abroad, through his leadership of the Minority Rights Group and then of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and as a UN rapporteur.

A Bold New Plan: Interview with Razmik Panossian

 Nanore Barsoumian

As Diasporan Armenian organizations struggle to shift their focus to better accommodate the needs facing Armenians worldwide—both in the independent republics, as well as in communities faced with renewed challenges—the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation recently drafted a bold five-year plan of action that it hopes will “create a viable future for the Armenian people.” Mindful of the challenges ahead, the foundation’s director of Armenian communities, Razmik Panossian, discussed the plan in a Skype interview with the Armenian Weekly.

Armenian Museum Fights for its Paris Home

Francine Guillou
Victoria Stapley-Brown

The Musée Arménien de France has been locked out of the Hôtel d’Ennery, a state-owned building in Paris that it has shared with the Musée d’Ennery since 1953.
The Armenian museum’s director, Frédéric Fringhian, has been fighting with the leadership of the Musée Guimet in Paris, the national museum of Asian art, which controls the building. In 2011, the Armenian museum was asked to temporarily move its collection of over 1,000 objects during renovations on the Musée d’Ennery. Although part of the collection was moved back in 2012, the Armenian museum’s space remains in poor condition and is unsafe for visitors, according to the Musée Guimet’s leadership.

Syrian government forces retake Kesab

Government forces flushed opposition fighters from their last strongholds in northwestern Syria near the Turkish frontier Sunday, seizing the Armenian town of Kasab and restoring government control over a nearby border crossing, activists and state media said.
The developments came as regime airstrikes pounded bases in eastern Syria belonging to the Al-Qaeda splinter group ISIS in coordination with the Baghdad government, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The military’s advances fully reversed the gains rebels had made during their three-month campaign in Latakia province, the rugged coastal region that is the ancestral heartland of President Bashar Assad.
The counteroffensive’s success is the latest blow to the rebels, who have suffered a string of recent setbacks.

Parajanov and Russian Heritage Month in New York

Sergei Parajanov's work will be exhibited as part of the 12th annual Russian Heritage Month in New York from June 17 – July 10. This piece of news has angered a number of Armenians in Armenia and the Diaspora, who point out that Parajanov, who was born in Tbilisi of Armenian parents and died in Yerevan, was not Russian and should not be represented as such.(*) Users on Facebook wrote that it was during the years of the Soviet Union that successful artists and scientists from the 15 republics were represented as Russian, and this practice shouldn't be allowed to continue after the republics achieved independence.

The Many Homelands of Sergei Parajanov

Eugenia Sokolskaya

Sergei Parajanov was always hard to define, but he was best summed up as “an Armenian born in Georgia and put in a Russian prison for Ukrainian nationalism,” and as one of Soviet film’s creative geniuses.
In comparing Russia to the Soviet Union, one often overlooked point is the sheer number of various ethnicities and nationalities that made up the USSR. The USSR was not just the Russian Federative Republic – it included 14 other republics, politically subjugated, but culturally distinct. In much the same way, Soviet film was not just Russian film: while the Russians had a technological headstart, actors and directors of the various republics eventually came into their own, drawing on their home cultures and methods of storytelling.

Armenian Identity in the Diaspora : Between Modernity and Preservation

 Laurence Ritter

The author of a PhD dissertation, Remodelling of Armenian Identities between the Diaspora and Armenia, from Victims to Individuals, French sociologist Laurence Ritter explains the specifities of the Armenian Diaspora formed after the 1915 Genocide. In her view, far from being a monolithic whole, the Diaspora shows different faces according to the countries Armenians emigrated to. Therefore, one should talk about not just one but several Diasporas. Armenia’s access to independence and the wide circulation of information in the digital era have also deeply changed the ways of the traditional Diaspora. Laurence Ritter analyses the various challenges the Diaspora must face in order to step into modernity.

Perincek vs. Switzerland: Freedom of Expression Distorted

 Mihran Dabag

In a Dec. 17, 2013 judgment on the case of Perincek vs. Switzerland, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) denounced the conviction of Turkish nationalist Dogu Perincek by the Swiss courts.
In 2005, during several events in Switzerland, Perincek had described the genocide of the Armenians as an “international lie,” thereby violating Swiss anti-racism legislation (Article 261 of the Swiss Penal Code). However, the ECHR viewed the remarks as protected by the fundamental right to freedom of expression, which it deemed was breached by the judgment of the Swiss courts. It would appear that the goal associated with this specific expression of opinion and the political context in which it occurred played no role.
Immanuel Kant once pointed out that “opinion is a consciously insufficient judgment.” And thus the following question begs to be asked: What is the political agenda behind a consciously “insufficient judgment” of false historical factual assertions in the case of human rights and international law violations?

8.6.14

Turkish False Flags and Invasion that Almost Was

David Boyajian

Turkey seems fond of so-called ‘false flag’ operations. In 1955, for example, the Turkish government covertly bombed its own consulate in Thessaloniki, Greece and blamed it on Greeks. The following day, Turkey stage-managed massive anti-Greek riots in Istanbul that killed over a dozen Christians and caused hundreds of millions in damage.
Fast forward to March 2014.   A leaked audiotape caught Turkish officials plotting to stage ‘false flag’ military attacks on their own territory and blame them on Syrians.  Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, General Yaşar Gürel, and Intelligence chief Hakan Fidan planned to use the attacks as an excuse to invade Syria.  The title of this article could easily apply to that plot.
To close observers of the Caucasus, however, it could also describe a failed covert Turkish plan to attack Armenia two decades ago and turn the geopolitics of the region upside down.

ADL's Dubious Survey

Since its release earlier in May, the Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) preposterously named "The Global 100: An Index of Anti-Semitism" has drawn ridicule from a variety of sources for being unscientific and thus invalid.
The jazzy-sounding "Global 100", which claimed that more than a quarter of the world's population is anti-Semitic, has been found wanting in proper methodology and on political grounds. Among the critics are author Norman Finkelstein (a child of Holocaust survivors) and Amira Haas, a leading columnist of the Israeli "Haaretz" newspaper. It has been also criticized as skewed to portray and to enforce Zionist ideology and agenda. Least of the survey's problem is that by interviewing just over 50,000 adults (102 countries in 96 languages), it claims there are more than one billion anti-Semites among us.
