Gallipoli Centenary Marks Another Snub for Turkish Minorities

Sibel Hurtas

The Gallipoli observances were guided by anti-minority narratives and actions that were enflamed by comparisons between the Gallipoli centenary and the approaching 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, when he was the foreign minister in 2011, said: “We will inform the whole world about 2015. Contrary to what some claim and disparage, we will tell the world that this will not be the anniversary of a genocide but of honorable resistance of a nation at Gallipoli.”

Karnig Panian’s ‘Goodbye Antoura’

In 1915, five-year-old Karnig Panian was living among his fellow Armenians in the Anatolian village of Gurin. Four years later, American aid workers found him at a Turkish-run orphanage in Antoura, Lebanon. He was among nearly 1,000 Armenian and 400 Kurdish children who had been abandoned by the Turkish administrators, left to survive at the orphanage without adult care. This extraordinary memoir tells the story of what happened in between.

Bones In Bronze Age Armenia Uncover A Strange Story

S. Mathur

It sounds like the perfect script for a sci-fi/ fantasy novel. A ruthless ruler under siege in his fortress, trying to keep his crumbling power intact through the divine gift of prophecy. Even as diviners cast the bones, the fortress is overrun and destroyed; the defenders forced to flee, or captured and killed. The whole truth will perhaps never be known but the story archaeologists are uncovering on the Tsaghkahovit Plain in central Armenia is stranger and more exciting than fiction.

Shifting the Armenian National Narrative on Women

Rupen Janbazian

Throughout Armenian history, women have held various roles in the national reality—from Armenian queens and princesses ruling in the medieval period, to female participation in the national liberation struggle of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Women have been instrumental in the many successes and accomplishments of the Armenian people; after all, they represent about half of the population. So, why wouldn’t they be credited with an equal share of the recognition and praise that men receive?

Armenian Genocide, a Century on

Vicken Cheterian

Geoffrey Robertson started his talk at the Responsibility 2015 conference in New York by telling the story of his great-uncle. William Robertson was an Australian soldier in the allied forces who in 1915 was sent to fight against the Ottoman army and, hardly twenty-four hours after disembarking at Gallipoli and joining his comrades in a charge on the cliff-top defences, was felled by a sniper or machine‐gunner.

Study Backs 5th-Century Historian’s Date for Founding of Armenia

Nicholas Wade

Movses Khorenatsi, a historian in the fifth century, wrote that his native Armenia had been established in 2492 B.C., a date usually regarded as legendary though he claimed to have traveled to Babylon and consulted ancient records. (*) But either he made a lucky guess or he really did gain access to useful data, because a new genomic analysis suggests that his date is entirely plausible.
Geneticists have scanned the genomes of 173 Armenians from Armenia and Lebanon and compared them with those of 78 other populations from around the world. They found that the Armenians are a mix of ancient populations whose descendants now live in Sardinia, Central Asia and several other regions. This formative mixture occurred from 3000 to 2000 B.C., the geneticists calculated, coincident with Movses Khorenatsi’s date for the founding of Armenia.

The Destiny of Print Media

Edmond Y. Azadian

When influential publications such as the Christian Science Monitor or Newsweek decided to drop their print versions and survive in an online format only, many people began writing the obituary of print media. But when the New York Times released the global issue of its 200-plus-page weekly magazine (by “reimagining a magazine”) one is reminded of Mark Twain’s famous quote, “the reports about my death have been greatly exaggerated.”
In the February 22, 2015 issue of the “reimagined magazine,” we read: “This magazine is 119 years old; nearly four million people read it in print every weekend. It did not need to be dismantled, sawed into pieces or drilled full of holes. Instead, we have set out to honor the shape of the magazine as it has been, while creating something that will, we hope, strike you as a version you have not read before … ideas about the relationship between print and digital and animating it all, a new spirit of inquiry that is subversive and sincere.”

Armenian Genocide - German Guilt?

Richard Fuchs

In the German Reichstag on September 29, 1916, the diplomat Gottlieb von Jagow had to give parliament an account of the terrible events in Turkey, then the Ottoman Empire.
It was about mass displacement and executions taking place in the eastern region of Anatolia. The German Empire was a colonial power there at the time and also an ally of the Ottoman government, which had previously initiated a mass persecution of Christian Armenians before the onset of World War I. "We did everything we could," stated Jagow in defense of Germany's passivity.
This silent acquiescence toward the mass murders has been the subject of the International Historians Congress in Berlin.

Starbucks becomes flashpoint between Turks, Armenians

Pinar Tremblay

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) posted on Feb. 18 a picture of women with traditional Armenian gear, holding a Starbucks coffee cup, under the Turkish crescent and star flags on their Facebook account. Under the photo, which was displayed at the Mulholland and Calabasas stores in the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles, ANCA posed the question: “Why is Starbucks selling coffee using an image of women, dressed in traditional Armenian costumes, celebrating a Turkish state that systematically victimized Armenian women during the Armenian genocide, and that still denies this crime against all humanity?” Starbucks, known as a rather liberal establishment, promptly issued an apology and removed the posters, which were displayed in a couple of locations in Southern California. The photographer responsible for the design of the poster, Timothy Rose, also issued an apology on his Web page explaining that he had not known the women were Armenian.

Armenia Country Branding: How National Character Becomes a Brand Icon

Vasken Kalayjian

Now that the Armenia Country Branding team has completed the discovery, analytic and strategic phases of building a brand identity for Armenia, it is working full speed ahead to put a face on it. This is where the creative process takes center stage.
Nonetheless, before arriving at a winning creative execution, meaning a logo and tagline, for Armenia, several more exploratory exercises are involved. After all, encapsulating 2000 years of history and the promise for the future in a few words and images is no easy feat.
However daunting this may sound, our discovery phase has uncovered a goldmine of compelling material to work with. The real challenge is to identify which of Armenia’s many national attributes best resonate with key stakeholders and primary audiences.
