En agosto de 1985, como miembro de la Subcomisión de Derechos Humanos de la ONU y como diplomático de la nueva democracia liderada por el presidente Alfonsín, participé en el espinoso debate que culminó consagrando el reconocimiento internacional del Genocidio de los armenios por las Naciones Unidas, con la aprobación del “Informe Whitaker”. Eran los pasos iniciales para consolidar el principio de jurisdicción universal; los derechos humanos serían el eje central de los procesos democráticos y de las relaciones entre los Estados.

The Tekirdag Waterworks Authority (TESKI) has discovered that Armenian tombstones have been used to cap sewers in the town of Malkara, 190 kilometers west of Istanbul, according to a report published by the Turkish Armenian weekly newspaper Agos.

Last June 24, the Committee of Culture of the [French] Senate heard Mr. Pierre Nora, director of studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales [EHESS], member of the French Academy, to have him give his advice on the reform of high school programs of history within the frame of a project of reform led by Minister of Education Mrs. Najat Vallaud-Belkacem.

Mr. Nora is naturally opposed, in coincidence with his previous standpoints, to the proposal of the Higher Council of Programs to include the question of the genocide of Armenians in the more general subject of World War I. He repeats, thus, in this occasion his principled opposition to any "intrusion of politics in the qualification of the past. [Because] in democracy, history belongs to historians."

In my history lessons in middle school and high school, I never heard any foreigner's name in the Ottoman army when our teachers talked about the Battle of the Dardanelles.

I did not even register this battle in my mind as part of World War I. There was a Battle of the Dardanelles, which was led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and we fought a heroic war against enemies.

So many years later I was shocked to learn that not only was the Battle of the Dardanelles led by German military officers, but also almost the entire Ottoman General Staff was under their control.

Atatürk was a war hero, as it was said, but he just led a battle in this or that front of the Dardanelles Campaign.

Armenia's anti-corruption council accused of lavish spending

A much-touted anti-corruption drive in Armenia has got off to a bad start as questions are raised about the spending and income of leading government members of the committee – including its chair, the prime minister.

The Anti-Corruption Council, which receives funds from the European Union and the United States Agency for International Development, formally began operations at the end of July. It is supposed to have opposition and civil society members as well as government officials on its ranks, but so far no one from the opposition or non-governmental organisations has joined – largely because of scepticism about its credibility.

Historical Data about Ancient Yerevan in a Scientific Work of the Russian Empire (19th Century)

The first edition (1881) of “Collection of the Materials to Describe Places and Races of the Caucasus” (Sbornik materialov dliya opisanya mestnostey i plemen Kavkaza) started publication of the results of the research of the Caucasus region with an article dedicated to Yerevan. According to it, the references about the Armenian city of Yerevan date back to the 7th century, while Turkic and Persian peoples appeared in the city only in the 15th century. The article was written by Stepan Pavlovich Zelinski, a teacher of preparatory classes in the Russian gymnasium of Yerevan.

En la Librairie Orientale, una librería de literatura armenia y oriental abierta en 1930, no lejos de la Sorbona, esa vida espiritual parece incluso "desarrollarse mejor que en ningún otro lugar del mundo". Los dos hombres que esperan delante de la puerta cerrada del negocio trabajan para que así sea. Y seguramente son conscientes de ello. Son armenios. "Somos armenios en el corazón", aclaran.
