In the Ruins: The 1909 Massacres of Armenians in Adana, Turkey

Scott Neuffer

Zabel Yessayan, In the Ruins: The 1909 Massacres of Armenians in Adana, Turkey, translated by G. M. Goshgarian, AIWA Press.

This unsparing, unflinching, and darkly poetic account of the 1909 massacre of 30,000 Armenians in Adana, Turkey, makes Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness seem like leisure reading. That’s because Zabel Yessayan, one of the most important Armenian woman writers of the modern era, is relentless in capturing every horrid detail of genocide: every burnt building, every blood-streaked field, and every broken and whimpering face of those who survived the massacre.

Pope Francis: "In Argentina, when you spoke of the Armenian extermination, they always used the word 'genocide.' I didn’t know another"

a press conference to the assembled journalists aboard the papal plane. He reflected on his three-day trip to Armenia, his upcoming trips to Azerbaijan and Poland, the role of the Pope emeritus, Christian unity, and the reformation. He also addressed Brexit, the idea of deaconesses, and how the Church might apologize for unjust discrimination toward homosexual persons.
Below is the transcription of the first set of questions, related to the Pope's Armenia trip, in translation by Catholic News Agency (www.catholicnewsagency.com). Some emphasis in the text and a few notes have been added by "Armeniaca."

Rondo à la Turk, Medieval Style and "Joke" Included

On Saturday, June 25, 2016, Turkish deputy prime minister Nurettin Canikli called Francis’ comments of the previous day “greatly unfortunate” and said they bore the hallmarks of the “mentality of the Crusades.” When Francis first used the word genocide last year, Turkey withdrew its ambassador for 10 months and accused the Pope of spreading lies.
Canikli said the term “does not comply with the truth”. “Everyone knows that. We all know it, the whole world knows it, and so do the Armenians,” he added. (*)

What Pope Francis Said in His June 24 Speech

1) The "powerful images" of Yeghishe Charents
It gives me great joy to be here, to set foot on the soil of this beloved land of Armenia, to visit a people of ancient and rich traditions, a people that has given courageous testimony to its faith and suffered greatly, yet has shown itself capable of constantly being reborn.
“Our turquoise sky, our clear waters, the flood of light, the summer sun and the proud winter borealis… our age-old stones … our ancient etched books which have become a prayer” (ELISE CIARENZ, Ode to Armenia). These are among the powerful images that one of your illustrious poets offers us to illustrate the rich history and natural beauty of Armenia. They sum up the rich legacy and the glorious yet dramatic experience of a people and their deep-seated love of their country.

Pope Francis denounces Armenian genocide during visit to Yerevan

Pope Francis denounced what he called the ideologically twisted and planned genocide of Armenians by Ottoman-era Turks a century ago as he arrived in Yerevan, Armenia, on Friday, June 24, 2016, for a symbolic weekend visit to mark the centenary of the massacre.
In the most carefully watched speech of his three-day trip, Francis ad-libbed the politically charged word “genocide” to his prepared text that had conspicuously left it out.

The AFP and the Two "Theses" of the Armenian Genocide

Seta Papazian
Translated from French by Vartan Matiossian

Every time that it is about the mass murder of 1915, the AFP is distinguished by frequently adding quotation marks to the word "genocide," including those cases when it does not correspond to any citation in the text. When it could content itself by stressing that Turkey persists in its denial, AFP chose to release, in detail and without caution, the falsified history, bitterly defended by the Turkish state. The communication agencies – commissioned by Ankara and Baku with millions of dollars – dreamed it and AFP graciously took it upon itself.
Do you imagine a double presentation of the Shoah "according to the Jews" and "according to Faurisson" every time that the annihilation of the European Jews is touched in the press? The sheer evocation of this hypothesis creates shudders.

Pope in Armenia: Father Lombardi Says that the Armenian Word "Medz Yeghern” Is “Stronger” than the Term Genocide

Translated from Italian by Vartan Matiossian

The Armenian word "Medz Yeghern" is even "stronger" than the term genocide. This is what answers Father Federico Lombardi, director of the press office of the Vatican, to the question about why there is still a certain shyness in the Vatican about using the term genocide to indicate the persecution and elimination that the Armenian people suffered in 1915. "Why -- Lombardi asked -- all this obsession to ask about this?" He added: "We know what happened. Nobody rejects that these were horrible massacres and we recognize that. But we do not want to make a trap of political debates because we go to the substance. It is an enormous tragedy."

Tehlirian’s Specter Returns: Germany’s Lower House Artfully Acknowledges and Regrets Armenian Genocide

 Ludér Tavit Sahagian

Following 101 years of dithering and nearly two decades of intense German civil society advocacy and petitioning, Germany’s lower house, the Bundestag, finally joined the national parliaments of nearly thirty countries on June 2, 2016 by acknowledging the veracity of the (ongoing) Armenian Genocide and regretting the German Kaiser Reich’s complicit role in the Genocide.
Over a hundred German-Armenian community members and other truth-and-justice seekers had gathered to welcome the landmark decision of German lawmakers both outdoors under the late spring sun and inside the parliamentary chamber. Turkey impulsively recalled its ambassador to Germany in protest and has threatened Germany with an “action plan” against it.

My conversation with the son of Soghomon Tehlirian, the man who assassinated the organiser of the Armenian genocide

Robert Fisk

Soghomon Tehlirian Junior doesn’t have much time for those who want the Armenian genocide recognized by the world. “The Armenians keep trying to tip things out of the grave,” he says. “It’s three generations ago. It’s history. Everyone killed a lot of people. You can’t go back to the Spanish inquisition and the Roman Empire and bring it back. That’s not me. I never remember my father saying one bad word about the Turks. He just wanted to live his life in peace.”
I listen to the brisk, youthful voice of this 86-year-old Armenian talking to me down the phone from America and I have to shake my head to remember that his father, Soghomon Tehlirian, was the assassin who shot dead Mehmet Talaat Pasha, the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire and organizer of the 1915 genocide of one and a half million Christian Armenians.

A Conversation with Collectif Medz Bazar’s Sevana Tchakerian: Music that Transcends Borders

Katherine Berjikian

I met Sevana Tchakerian a couple times before I got the opportunity to interview her.
I had been in Armenia for a couple days and out of boredom I went with a couple friends to a fancy, kind of tourist café. Half way through the meal, Sevana and a person I never really caught the name of, sat down.  After a little while, kind of out of boredom, I stood up to make my round of kisses and leave. However, Sevana stopped me before I left, and insisted on talking to me about my outfit.

Two Genocides, Two Peoples, and One Grievance: Armenians in Dhaka

Adnan Morshed

Turkey seems to have a burlesque history of genocide denial. On June 2, the German Parliament voted to recognise the 1915 killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as "genocide." Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's reaction was predictable: “Germany has no right to comment on genocide.” Ankara recalled its ambassador from Berlin.
Sounds familiar? Ankara's recent withdrawal of its ambassador to Bangladesh following the execution of an indicted “war criminal” reveals the Erdogan regime's grotesquely negligent attitude toward the genocide in Bangladesh during 1971.
